Who We Are
our Board of Directors
that determines the direction of the ship

Our Board of Directors are devoted to build a sustainable and impactful organization that will make a markable difference in our community and the wildlife that we share this space with – now and in the future

Lynn Ravat
Founding Member / Director

Lynn is the compassionate, artistic, beautiful, and sensitive soul of the team.  She daily (if not hourly!) advises countless people on several platforms on what to do and where to take compromised urban wildlife.  She sees the beauty and value in all life and will tirelessly seek for a solution to a problem to ensure the best outcome for that little life.  She has a wealth of knowledge on birds, ranging from tiny unidentifiable hatchlings to parrots and raptors.  We admire her dedication to help and heal those that need it the most!

Karien Schmidt
Founding Member / Executive Director

Karien has a bachelors degree in Animal Science with a special interest in wildlife nutrition. She looks after the more structured side of the organization.  Thanks to her vast range of knowledge and experience gained from working at various well-known animal- and wildlife-based organizations, she can combine that which works best and mold it to suit the requirements of an urban wildlife rehabilitation center.  She’s a firm believer in sharing her knowledge on wildlife nutrition, husbandry and rehabilitation to empower those around her and to ensure the next generation builds on our efforts.

Jafar-Sadiq Ntuli
Founding Member / Director

Jafar is the rooster among the hens, the family man, business mind, go-getter and people’s person of the team.  He has extensive knowledge and experience in sales and public relations and is SpottyBird’s team builder and co-fundraiser.  With such a vibrant and energetic spirit, one can’t help getting excited for future possibilities!

What We do
1.
Advise

We advise people on what to do when they have found an injured, young, or compromised animal, and we put them in touch with people closest to them that can assist, or tell them where to take it to should it need medical intervention.

2.
Rehabilitate

Once our permits are in place, we’ll be able to stabilize, treat, raise and/or nurse injured and compromised wildlife back to health and ensure they are successfully rehabilitated and ready, before being released where they came from, or into a suitable habitat.

3.
Research

Once operational, we’ll be able to monitor released wildlife for as long and far as possible to determine the success of the rehabilitation and release process, or to adjust our protocols if needed, to ensure the released wildlife are coping in the wild.

4.
Mitigate

We advise the public when faced with human-wildlife conflict, and will try, as far as possible, to find a suitable solution for both.

5.
Educate

We bring awareness to the species of wildlife found in our urban areas, and educate kids and adults alike, on what to do when they come across compromised wildlife, want to attract wildlife to their gardens or what to do to keep wildlife out their gardens (’cause let’s face it, not everyone is keen on sharing their space with wildlife).

6.
Train

Once the center is open, we’ll be able to provide experiential learning opportunities for both local and international young professionals such as vets, vet nurses, ecology- and nature conservation students in the field of urban wildlife-, environmental- and ecosystems rehabilitation.

What we Strive For

Our vision (or big dream), is to see the protection of our urban biosphere. How will we reach our dream? By making it our mission to ensure a healthy and balanced urban biosphere through wildlife and ecosystems rehabilitation and community engagement.

Our goals are therefore to:

1.
Rehabilitate

Ethically rehabilitate indigenous urban wildlife and return them back into a suitable environment

2.
Restore

Restore affected ecosystems back to a pristine-like state

3.
Educate

Educate and train future conservationists, veterinary and para-veterinary students regarding wildlife and ecosystems rehabilitation and to …

4.
Empower

Engage with and empower communities for the greater good of the environment and conservation

So how about it? Would you like to become part of our BIG DREAM?
